Choose Beautiful
Thursday, April 09, 2015Dove's new 'Choose Beautiful' campaign video made me cry. It's a pretty simple concept:
In 5 cities around the world, Dove labelled two doors next to each other. One 'Beautiful' and one 'Average'.
I think this is interesting for a few reasons.
1. It shows how much we really do care what others think of us. Even though some days I may feel beautiful, I would never have walked through the Beautiful door in fear that nobody around thought the same way about me. This also seemed to be the case for several women in the video.
2. It shows how afraid a lot of women everywhere are to admit that they feel beautiful. I for one, would never use that word if asked to describe how i see myself. It's not that I particularly hate anything about myself, I just tend to be very self-critical about my appearance.
3. On the flip side, it also shows how empowering something as simple as a word above a door can be. Women who spent days going through the 'Average' door started to feel more average. One woman said after a few days she chose to go through the 'Beautiful' door and she felt a change. She felt confident, and proud.
Is releasing the fear of being 'beautiful' and embracing it all it takes to really feel beautiful?
What do you think?
