The Post-Grad Friendship Crisis

Saturday, September 12, 2015

This will be my second fall not going back to school. I graduated in June of 2014, and was ridiculously upset about saying goodbye to all of my school friends. Of everyone I spent most of my three college years with, the closest to me lived about an hour away.

(This is me and Asha. We met on the very first day of College, and because the God's of fate made both of our last name's start with 'T', we got to walk down the aisle together at Grad.)

I've always been the type of gal who didn't need a man, but would rather have a solid group of friends to lean on when I needed a good vent session or a drive-in companion. I go big with my friendships- I mail letters, make sappy birthday gifts (collages are a fan favorite), and like to annoy my friends by tagging them in nostalgic Facebook posts/Tweets.

At this point, people have moved away for school or other life-related purposes and I really only have 2 close friends left who live in close proximity. I call this bitter loneliness and crushing solitary boredom the 'post-grad-friendship-crisis', and it's the time in life when you find out who's really important to you and vice versa.

In this day and age, it's so easy to get in touch with someone that it almost seems intentional to loose touch with someone you actually give a crap about. Texting, voicemail, Skype, Facebook, hell- even a snapchat with a cute little emoji caption so that it's obvious you thought about them at least 5 seconds that day. I've been really trying to talk to my good college friends more often and try to keep up with everyone's busy lives post-grad. It's so cool to see what everyone's up to, and to be able to be excited for them.

So how do you get over the post-grad-friendship crisis? Easy- try. Call 'em. Meet halfway between your town and theirs once a year for coffee and a good long talk. The friends you make in college are awesome because you all have shared interests and (like in my case) common goals. Plus, if you got lucky like me, they're pretty cool people.

So here's to all of the amazing friends you made in college, and to the hopes that with a little teamwork you can be friends for a long, long time.
